Shark Bay

After the adventure and excitement on Dirk Hartog Island, we enjoyed some time to reset at a caravan park in Denham. We stayed on the same park Andy and I stayed at more than 10 years ago, but the footprint of the campsite has doubled since then and the place is huge! The other thing we noticed was the number of HUGE fishing boats on trailers in the caravan park. It turns out we have arrived in Denham just in time to see the start of the annual fishing competition!

First morning in Denham and I had booked a fishing charter for the boys. 8am, two very excited boys were ready and waiting on the jetty in Denham for their first fishing charter…

Four short hours later, they returned with even bigger grins on their faces and a massive haul of fish!!

Next stop… the fish filleting table!! Thankfully, some experience fishermen were on hand at the table and more than happy to lend some words of wisdom to some novice fisherfolk who clearly had no idea what to do with 14 massive snapper!

After a feast of fish for dinner, it was time to batten down the hatches as a storm was due to come through the following day. It’s always funny to see how different people respond to the weather warnings and there are always some seasoned campers who decide they have seen enough storms and keep their awnings and shelters out regardless of the forecast. We opted for the safe approach and brought in everything (not convinced our awning would have made it through the night when the wind picked up!).

As usual though, a storm is usually followed by sunshine (and lots of wind!) and we enjoyed a little bit of sightseeing before making our way north.

Shark Bay remains near the top of my list of favourite places in Australia. World Heritage listed for outstanding natural beauty, and a safe haven for a number of endangered marine species, it’s just that place that makes you say ‘wow’! Stoked to have had the opportunity to come back here with the little people and share this super special place with the new light of Dirk Hartog Island.
