Kalbarri is a small town approximately 570km north of Perth. Yes, we are absolutely motoring through this section of the coastline but there are a couple of reasons for that. The main reason is that we are on a bit of a timeline to get to Exmouth for mid May. The other reason is that there is so much of this coastline to see, so you have to skip by some parts and we have travelled this section of the coast a couple of times now so sticking to the highlights for the kids.
Just south of Kalbarri, we stopped at the Pink Lake to see if it really was as pink as the travel brochure suggested or if that was just photoshop. Turns out it is pretty pink!

Great opportunity to get the drone out and to see the full effect….

Whilst the town of Kalbarri may be relatively small, the National Park is huge, covering 186,000 hectares of rugged terrain. The Murchison River, WA’s second longest river, lies at the heart of the area and carves out an incredible gorge that meanders through the Kalbarri National Park.

It wouldn’t be a trip to Kalbarri if we didn’t go to the iconic natures window look out. We last came here back in 2010 and, at the time, the water level in the river was really low. It was amazing to see the water level so high and, consequently, the area around looking so green. I wonder what the water level will be like the next time they come here?

There have been a couple of upgrades around the National Park since we last visited, not least the construction of a full bitumen road all the way to the popular look out spots. Last time we travelled here, we had to navigate long stretches of the most corrugated dirt road i think I had ever been on (but we had a hire van then so didn’t mind too much!). The biggest change is the addition of a ‘sky walk’, or large iron walk way which extends over the gorge. It really does provide an amazing view but Finlay wasn’t a fan with his fear of heights and clung to the rail!

The spectacular coastline provides for some pretty special sunsets – one of the things I love most about W.A.

Always a fan of a local park, Kiera spotted the nature park on the foreshore and we couldn’t resist an afternoon play. The park will rank pretty high on Kiera’s’ top parks scale (but I think she would like it more if there were less flies!)

And perhaps the most amazing reason to love Kalbarri is that we found a microbrewery called ‘Finlay’s’…. Just amazing! Thanks for the trip down memory lane Kalbarri… we will be back again I am sure!
