There are certainly many sides to Margaret River and it wouldn’t be fair to check out the winery and not venture to the beach. We are pretty much in the middle of school holidays and the Easter long weekend so I am thankful that we were able to book our site at Prevelly campsite a few months ago (about the only forward planning I have done aside from Exmouth!) as the park was full for the long weekend.
Home to one of the most well known surf breaks in Australia, the headland at Prevelly made for a perfect sundown location to watch the waves.

Being the Easter long weekend, we decided to set up camp for a little longer than our usual 2 or 3 nights and enjoyed being stationary in one place for five whole nights. Only a short drive out of Margaret River itself, Prevelly was a great place to enjoy the beach and still get into the town easily for anything you need. We hired kayaks with the kids and explored up the river and generally just enjoyed checking out the various beaches around the area.
I took the kids for a short trip up to Busselton to head back to the longest jetty in the Southern Hemisphere and correct my failure from the other day when we turned up to go to the underwater observatory at the end of the pier but were unable to get tickets due to school holidays! Planning ahead this time, I bought tickets for the 9am train which takes you to the end of the 1.8km jetty and the observatory.

The observatory was pretty cool and basically offers windows into the bay around the jetty and lots of marine life which has made the jetty home. Geographe Bay is super shallow for a long way out – hence reason for a 1.8km jetty – and also home to one of the largest sea grass meadows. We decided to walk back along the jetty as the kids realised they could walk faster!
Of all the beaches in the Margaret River – Busselton area, I think Yallingup is my favourite. There is just something special about the beach, watching the surf and lots of fun snorkelling in the shallow lagoon. We saw heaps of octopus which is always fun!
Margaret River region has been lots of fun but it’s time to start making our way north and spend a few days in Perth visiting friends, and then on to some warmer temperatures hopefully!
