We have been in SA for almost a month now and covered around 1500km along the SA coastline since we first arrived in Mount Gambier. Having never been to SA before, I didn’t really know what to expect and to be honest, we have been blown away! The coastline is so dramatic and varied, each part of the coast having its own unique character.
After our time on the Yorke and in the South Flinders Ranges, it was time to check into a camp site for a few nights, opportunity to get our clothes and sheets clean and make use of a powered site and amenities. We are getting used to splitting our time between powered and unpowered sites and making the most of power when we have it. We had three nights in Whyalla – a pretty large industrial area with a huge steelworks on the harbour. It’s amazing how big they look when surrounded by lots of smaller buildings rather than other large industrial sites. Friendly dolphins in the harbour clearly used to a free feed from the fishing boats and all the people fishing along the jetty. All stocked up with supplies and COVID vaccinations/ boosters all up to date and we set off down the Eyre Peninsula.
About 2 hours south of Whyalla, we pulled into the small village of Port Gibbon. I say village but to be honest I have no idea what is actually there. We found an amazing cliff top camp for the grand total of $5 a night so decided to hang out for a few days.

This week marks the start of Term for the kids and this was a pretty amazing spot to set up a classroom. Sydney Distance Education School has been pretty awesome and provided all the materials and resources we need for ‘van school’. After the last two years of various periods of home schooling, we feel pretty comfortable with the idea of remote learning but also pleased that Kiera has had at least one year of school with a real teacher under her belt so she understands the phonics (clearly better than we do!)

Once again another amazing spot to find, with a mix of cool rocks on the beach, stunning cliff line, beautiful empty beach, cool sand dunes and amazing kite surfing to top it off! Fab few days here at Port Gibbon… now time to continue down the coast.
