When time just stopped!

We have been on the Yorke Peninsula for the last 8 nights but it kind of feels like the place where time just stopped. Driving down the coastline towards Marion Bay feels like a long time ago. After a couple of rainy days at Marion Bay, we decided we needed to give the Yorke some more time so set off towards a beach camp on the west coast of the peninsula called Wauraltee Beach. We planned on staying one night but ended up there for three. Simply amazing!

Clearly quite a popular beach camp spot, there must have been 20 vans parked along this amazing stretch of coastline. An easy place for time to just stop. Unfortunately the little stingers in the water managed to keep finding Kiera it ever the brave little mermaid she kept getting back in the water (encouraged by the dolphins swimming close to shore one morning I am sure!). The kids made some friends and we had plenty of people to chat to and hear all about their own family travel adventures- some just starting out like us, some here for a last long weekend from Adelaide and others well advanced into their trip. Lots of stories to hear and places to learn about. It kind of makes me pleased that we don’t actually have a plan!

Maybe eleven years ago, Andy and I spent some time travelling up the west coast and well and truly fell in love with the beaches over in WA. I honestly thought we would have to be back in WA before we found such amazing coastline but SA has been such an amazing surprise. This camp at Wauraltee has been as stunning as some of the beach camps we had in northern WA and a real reminder that there is so much of this country to explore and gems to find. We could have easily driven past this place and missed it so I am feeling a little bit thankful on the decision from the WA premier to keep the border closed as it has given us the gift of time in SA.

Last night we were treated to an incredible lighting storm out to sea. It was amazing to watch and went on for hours. Kids played happily with their friends and it was quite a way to end what has been a very different, but super special, Australia Day.

In the absence of any real plan, we are heading now towards the South Flinders Ranges, spending some time on a station and seeing what we can find before we scoot on down towards to Ayre Peninsula. Onwards…
